The mysterious Jason and the mysterious way he died… I would like to know more about him. The onlything is see how much he and Penrose used to be great friends. WAIT..! Is the Sea Hags the oldea Popeye’s enemy?
I consider Steeple, as a whole, to be John’s masterpiece. Even more than any of his other masterpieces. I feel like the main characters are all close personal friends of mine. (Okay, Tom’s that guy I’ve never liked who’s always hanging out with my friends and I sometimes refer to as a friend, even if he isn’t, but who can sometimes be fun to have around, anyway.)
Hrm. Here in the States we’d put ketchup on the chips, and malt vinegar and tartar sauce on the fish. No big deal if some of the ketchup got on the fish, but usually there are definitely rules as to which sauce is used with what. We also seem to have lost the peas somewhere along the way.
We have. Excellent malt vinegar (don’t say ‘Vinegar”, says ‘Sarsons’) and delicious HELLman’s mayonnaise (other mayonnaises are available), but some people insist on slathering the abomination which is ketchup on every damn thing!.
I can’t stand the stuff myself, and put salt and (lots of) vinegar on both fish and chips, and add mayonnaise to the chips and home made tartare sauce to the fish.
Mushy peas are divine as they are and need nothing added to them. Except perhaps, a pickled onion.
Given that there are mushy peas there, I would assume it’s fish ‘n’ chips, in which case ketchup is quite normal (I prefer HP sauce on the chips, and tartar on the fish, but that’s just me). Don’t think there’s quite enough regular crimping for a Cornish pastie.
Pains me a bit to see a photo of Penrose smiling and relatively non-weathered face and to know that his best days are long behind him. I might be in the minority but I never got the impression that Rev. Penrose doesn’t really care about anyone. I think he does, but his work has left him weathered, tired and emotionally numb.
Presumably, since there’s also a folder titled “Sea Devil Incursions (Historic”. (Not sure why he left out the closing parenthesis. Perhaps he died while he was writing it?)
It seems like Jason was the ‘brains’ of their partnership, while David was the ‘brawn’. Jason studied the creatures of the deep, tried to understand them. Without his influence, David became rudderless, simply attacking his foe with no actual plan or end goal in sight.
Maggie might be exactly what he needs. She doesn’t understand their foe, but her heart’s in the right place, and she stands up to him.

I suspect that someday, if not within this storyline, Mr. A will reveal all.
Unsuspected egg allergy, I’d imagine.
Agh, I love this world. I love these characters. That is all.
Right???? Right in the heartstrings.

Tom Pendennis: Occasionally Tolerable In Small Doses
On a side note, is Penrose putting catsup on fish?
Yes, though he’d call it “tomato ketchup”.
“Tomato blood”
Heinz Ketchup is being sold as Tomato Blood during the Hallowe’en season in the US.

All of this may be a regional thing.
Not only that, but he’s carefully licked it all off by the next panel.
Is this truly the norm in England? It’s a more benighted land than I ever imagined! You’ve got tartar sauce and good vinegar right there, man!

Looks like a pasty to me. (Research: “Cornish Pasty”)
Now me personally I would never put ketchup on a pasty, but it takes all kinds. They are my second favorite thing.
I sort of assumed it was battered fish but a pasty is a good suggestion.
Battered fish would make sense too, but it’s definitely the shape of a typical pasty. With the roll crimped edge and everything.
And nobody puts ketchup on battered fish!

Interfering, sure, but technically Billie’s the infernal one these days.

I’m not giving up on ol’ Penrose just yet…
He fights his feelings, because he knows that sooner or later the people he cares for will get et, and it will hurt his poor bruised heart.
Also, eyeing that photo in the last panel. To quote Esther and Daisy; “FLASHBACK!!! FLASHBACK!!! FLASHBACK!!!
Great ketchup action there.
No mint sauce on the mushy peas, though. Wouldn’t pass muster up here.
“Sea Devil Incursions”
Yes, Dane, Biff, Judy, Nicky, the bloody lot of them…

Tentative tentacles cause significant tentage?
Either way that blue ‘tenta’ folder has a lot of content in it
“Not because I’m in it, but because it degrades women – which I hate.”
The Reverend is the only person I’ve seen who can maintain a full glower while he eats.
How old was Jason that his box of effects has a section titled ‘EARLY 20TH C.’?
I assume he did some historical research. I could be wrong, of course.

Tibkins sighting, panel 3.
You know what?
At first glance, I misread the writing on the box in panel 2 as “arson”…
Also, the onomatopoeia of the day: BLOT BLOT BLOT
Mrs. Clovis’ day off, so the pasty take out.
Good to see the Reverend Penrose researching instead of swinging the axe.
I can’t wait for them to smooch!
Hm, I just noticed: The way the frame cuts off the box labeled “JASON” in the second panel, it says “A SON”.
Poor tragic old given away in the header image Jason
The Reverend continues to impress.
