Since the Romans started building roads
I watched an episode of Wycliffe as research for these Clotted Crimes comics and the director was a “Ferdinand Fairfax”. He’s no longer with us, but in Steeple he lives on. I’m not sure what kind of pineapple drama Billie and Maggie are pantomiming in panel 2 but it looks like they are giving the production its money’s-worth. — COLOURS BY SAMMY BORRAS
May I just say that I hope against hope that Billie was cast as the evil-doer.
I’m slightly saddened that the title of today’s comic is not “Beautiful nut work!” (However, I do understand. You can’t have two nut-related titles in a row. People would get the wrong idea.)
You haven’t internalised your Asterix. Romans are nuts.
Cashews are nuts. Romans are crazy.
If you want to nitpick, cashews are drupes.
Or nutpick, as it were.
But who would need a nutpick for cashews? They don’t even have shells.
You’d need a drupepick for that!
Besides, we’re well past Lewd Week.
No, that was Lurid Week.
Lewd Week remains open to issue at John’s discretion…or OURS.
Awwww. Tom Pepperdine looks like the most nice and friendly person you can hope to meet at least once in your life ♡. Mrs. Clovis has really good taste… what a fantastic man ♡♡♡!
And by “Olivier”, Ferdy means Giles Olivier, a lesser-known character actor in 20th century TV. Giles had little fame, but was well respected by everyone who worked with him, and he always had a pleasant, positive outlook. “Livin-well Livy” they used to call him.
Ah, no relation to Sir Lawrence then?
Third cousins, but weirdly enough it was through their mothers. The shared last name was entirely coincidental.
Acting trivia: “nut work” actually refers to the way male actors who want their character to come across as formidable and emotionally distant will clench a particular area of their body. It induces exactly the kind of squinting-into-the-middle-distance demeanour that marks the true professional.
I totally believe you. David Suchet is on record saying he developed his distinctive walk for Poirot by clenching a coin in his nether regions. “Bum work”?
Is this a reference to Joey on Friends’ method of making himself cry on-camera?
I strongly suspect all of my insights about this and every other topic are unconsciously influenced by Friends episodes.
And actually, I thought at first “wonderful nut work” was a callback to Billie’s brief consideration of starting an OnlyFans site.
I think Maggie’s pineapple drama may even be upstaging Pepperdine’s nut work
Wonderful nut work – I was so taken in, I forgot it was a TV show.
So… not extras, but (probably) not major roles. Minor roles. But… possibly recurring?
Doesn’t look like they have any lines, but you never know.
What’s interesting is how smiley they were when Sam was at the booth, and now how they scowl at the coppers. Perhaps these locals are hiding something…
A story that’s been around since the Romans started building roads: “Hey Boudica, want to get a Pax of my Romana?” “Watch out bro, those gingers are crazy….”
Panel 4 feels like something special to me.
“Alas, poor pineapple… I knew it, Bilinda. A fruit of infinite juice, of most excellent flavor…”
Hmmmm. I am going to be VERY interested in seeing how (or IF!) these Jaded TV Types bump upon the local Church of Satan.
Pineapples happen to employ the best method of photosynthesis yet discovered by Earth life. Second best is used by maize, sugar cane, and cactus. Most of the rest muddle along.
I like how after “cut” the frame is gone with a vengeance.
