Are these two vehicles old archenemies, perhaps? I can’t wait to find out! (I could just read the pdf version I got from Patreon, I suppose, but I won’t. Not until after the story’s finished here.)
Wait- John ALLISON. ALISON Blaire. Coincidence? Or… something more? (Although, come to think of it, there’s actually one ‘L’ of a difference between the two names.)
Two problems with this: Unless highly modified (I know the guy who can do it) no Type 2 is going to overtake anything with more horsepower than an electric bicycle. The Second problem is those early Type 2 VWs had 6 volt electrical systems, and even when the lights worked they put out about as much light as a geriatric firefly in poor health.
One problem with that: This is clearly some kind of otherworldly VW so none of those Car Facts might apply. And in fact after driving though The Mist, the reverend could actually be in an other world.
I just figured the VW bus overtaking the Rev’s new car was more a commentary on the car than on the Rev’s penchant for obeying the speed limit… In fact, I hadn’t even considered the speed limit to be in play here. Guess this really is an otherworldly realm!
Dean, I am testing it on my phone now… when the display narrows beyond a certain point on iPhone, the reply button vanishes. I had not spotted this, thank you for pointing it out. I have had a few problems with the comments code on this new theme but it’s so spread out across various files that I can’t easily cut it out to re-format it, I simply don’t have time, and I can’t revert back to the old theme and comics CMS plug-in because that’s a nightmare in the offing too.
Yes I know exactly what you mean. Travelling down a country road at night with just the hedges illuminated on each side and when there are no other cars around. It seems like I’m travelling down a tube. Sometimes it feels like I’m travelling in time or maybe I’m stationary and the road is moving past me. Or maybe it’s just the drugs I’m taking.
This is annoying. I discovered a while back that I’d somehow accidentally ended up with two Comixology accounts, somehow both using the same email address. I don’t use Comixology very often, so I never got around to trying to untangle that problem. Now that Comixology has merged with Amazon, I find the wrong account has been merged, i.e. the one that doesn’t have the original 5 issues of Steeple. I can’t find any way to access that account. 🙁
The Rev drives an unfamiliar car like I do, never knowing which control will affect what part of the car sometimes taking a boring drive into moments of terror.
Overtaken by a VW Microbus!
Can there be any greater shame?
Words can’t express how much I’m enjoying this story. And I’m not even really a car guy.
Very “Outrun” – I dig it!

Same. Downloaded it but there’s something about enjoying it a day at a time. The PDF is for later to re-read all in one go
Or maybe it’s like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enqNl7tdLR4
Or… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SutDTIhbQ2g
Maybe we’re still partly in the MU, and Penrose is being pursued by Dazzler!
I actually LOVE that idea.

I have absolutely no idea about what is happening. But it’s awesome!!!
Maybe it’s just because I’ve been replaying ancient Ultima games in dosbox lately, but I’m struck by the CGA palette of today’s comic.
Rarely do you see (255,255,0) and (0,255,255) used together. But back in the day when you only had four colors…
What prevents this from having the usual tropical feel is the deep purple it is all shrouded in.
To be clear, when I started using PC’s, EGA was already standard, but many games (such as Alleycat) were still CGA.
Not gonna lie… it took me a split second to figure out how the Rev. was waving out of the “passenger” side window of the car. >.<
Tredregyn exists in a strange parallel universe… called the UK.
I just assumed he was big enough to fill the entire front of the car and lean out either window.
In the second panel, you can easily see which side of the car he’s on.

In a universe where people routinely use Bing, anything is possible.
One problem with that: This is clearly some kind of otherworldly VW so none of those Car Facts might apply. And in fact after driving though The Mist, the reverend could actually be in an other world.
But what if you’re abiding by a low speed limit and the car behind you, no matter how slow, is impatient.
BLEW UR MIND

Speed limits in Cornwall are imposed more by the laws of physics than those of the land.
[Scott’s]
I Canna change the laws of physics
[/Scott’s]
Unless it’s cartoon physics.
You’re missing the main point which makes all of your points moot: this is clearly a VW from another realm. Earthly laws of physics do not apply.
Oh shit, is that the coven from a previous chapter?!
I was just thinking ‘Don’t we know that mad bastard from somewhere?’
I think you’re right. Which, come to think of it, could link this story, perhaps tenuously, to another, non-Steeple story we read recently.
Loving the color palette in this sequence with what I assume is a phantom VW Van.
I’m kind of imagining some creepy John Carpenter/Angelo Badalamenti-esque synth music for this strip.
I thought it was a Daewoo but now I think it’s a Hyundai Accent. I had one a few years ago. It wasn’t great but at least it wasn’t hanuted.
Accent 1998, looks pretty darn close to the car.
Yea looks about right. Late 90s accent of some kind. Roommate used to have one.
Let me, guess. John watched “Duel” recently…
The “Pieces Of You” hitmaker?
[This joke is provided free of charge and should be considered as such.]
Ah, thank you for clarifying. So, you were watching “Duel” while listening to “Who will save your soul” and then inspiration struck…
That movie terrified me as a kid.
Me too. And when you have that film running at the back of your mind, even a Kleinbus will be not only disquieting but downright s c a r y .
Is anyone else unable to reply to comments? Since the site update, the ‘Reply’ button doesn’t appear when I use a phone or tablet.
I’m using an android phone with the Duck Duck Go tinfoil hat browser (hang about, why am I still using that?) and it works for me.

Try turning your phone to Landscape mode. I find that the new format works better in Landscape mode than in Portrait mode.
Yes, that does it.
Welcome to South-West England’s most successful street-racing/international black ops action series. It’s The Slow and the Sedate 3: Longshore Drift.
John did this just so he can use that cool ‘headlights’ effect.
Why do I feel our good Rev just traveled in time?
Yes I know exactly what you mean. Travelling down a country road at night with just the hedges illuminated on each side and when there are no other cars around. Looks like a picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.
I
DAMMIT, STILL CAN’T EDIT OR DELETE!
We are all always traveling (forward) in time.

Great story to get a free peek at issues 1-5.
Yay! I finally got that account successfully merged, and all 5 issues showed up! (Seriously, the Amazon/Comixology merge was not done very well.)
Reverend Penrose’s angry driving in his crappy little car is somehow so delightful.
The Rev drives an unfamiliar car like I do, never knowing which control will affect what part of the car sometimes taking a boring drive into moments of terror.
Truly one of the mysteries of life.
Wow,
a pink rather than red VW Microbus, possibly with shovels and rakes and implements of destruction inside.
Zaphod
Documented with twenty-seven 8 x 10 colored glossy pictures with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one.
I think the pink coloring might be an effect of the lighting. On the cover, it’s red. https://steeple.church/comic/hell-on-wheels-pt-1-starts-monday/
Give ’em the ol’ Razzle-Dazzle…
I too always quote that PIF when night driving (being night driven)
