Tibkins isn’t the horrible elder horror. The awful one-eyed thing that Tibkins encounters in panel 5 is. According to the text in panel 2, its name is Flovorr.
God, this whole strip is so masterful. So much menace as we finally see what happened to Shelley and then we find out that these worshippers of the Deep Ones have misinterpreted Tibkins as some kind of Apocalyptic prophecy. I was in stitches XD
John’s entire career is masterful. Only an unjust universe has prevented his exaltation to the peerage as the 1st Baron Tackleford as far as I’m concerned.
We’ve studied your texts but we do not have the wisdom. Pretty much how I feel about every manual for every new gadget I’ve bought in the last ten years or more.
I feel sorry for our color blind friends that won’t be able to appreciate the difference between normal scarlet Shelley and her more emerald form in this comic.
Shelley: “Alright, I’ll tell you. Flovorr will arrive on 3 June, but only if you let me go right now. See, we kind of had a thing and it ended badly, so it would be awkward if I were here when he arrived. Fire-and-brimstone-incinerating-you-bystanders kind of awkward.”
Hanging the letters “CLOSE BY” on their telephone line is a dead giveaway. I’m sure Lottie and Penrose will have this sorted out within a couple of pages of part 2 and we can get on with the comical misunderstandings of people’s ages and relationship statuses.
I doubt Tibkins is getting much use out of that snorkel in the deep deep trough. I would write it off as standard scuba equipment, except he(?) doesn’t appear to have a tank.
So, can Tibkins breath underwater? If not, where’s his tank? If so, why the snorkel?
(Yes, I fully realize that I’m talking about a character in a children’s book set in a wonderfully absurd web comic. Just feeling silly this morning.)
Now that Checkov’s axes are Brasso’d, when does “Lady Sparkles” make its appearance?
Uh-oh.
Oh my god I love it
Every podcast from her on out, luv.
Wait… Does that mean it’s not the first time someone has mistaken that nice book for a messianic prophecy?
The way this world works, it seems more likely that Shelley unwittingly wrote a nice book about an Elder God that actually exists.
(possibly more than one)

Yeah, that’s some impressive fontishness!

Gah, screwed up my link…

If anything Tibkins is likely some kind of kaiju guardian of the Earth and friend of mankind like Mothra or Gamera.
So, Tibkins is the prophet of the return of Flovorr. That will lead the sea to a new age of depression!? GOOD!
These are some Gunnerkrigg Court-edque shenans
I get the feeling that these aren’t “podcast people”.
…maybe POD people. But not podcast people…
I know who they are. I know! I know! But I won’t tell.
I’m fascinated to know who Andrew thinks the Purleys are.
I won’t spoil it for the class at large. But I did leave my guess back on the comic where Shelley got abducted if you want to see!
One big hint for the class, though:
In panel 3, the adornment on the shadowy figure’s face is *not a beard*.
The Purleys have discovered that Shelley is Q.
In the clutches of demented aquarians?
This is the wrong age for that sort of thing.
You mean the moon isn’t in the seventh house?
Nor is Jupiter aligned with Mars.
Then peace won’t guide the planets
Nor will love steer the stars.
“Aquarians”! Heh.
You’re…close.
I bet Erin could handle this situation. Shelley’s too sweet.
Erin is definitely capable, but many have underestimated Shelley Winters and paid an awful price for it.

She’s a big big girl, in a deep deep trough

“Welcome to Flovorr country!” or, for those who aren’t 60+ years old, “Welcome to Flovoortown!”
“How many podcasts do I have to say that on?” is the perfect line for 2021.
Everybody’s talking about the plot implications and I’m just impressed by the letters on the line, blowing in the wind.

Well, Penrose is an expert on the local sea monsters, and these Purley guys, well…
HA! Another sharp eye has noticed the true Purley lineage.
I like Shelley’s deep ocean depression metaphor, and good for her touching on difficult subjects in children’s literature
Indeed, Shelley is pure genius

It’s a metaphor for depression! (How many times do we have to keep explaining that to people?!)
Well, I never metaphor I didn’t like.
I sense Desmond Fisherman entering any moment now… Maybe these are his cousins?
Maybe they could pass Desmond off as Flovorr.
