Such a naughty dog
I had three goes at drawing this comic. I was at a low ebb. Also I was unmotivated because it was too toilety. I’m highbrow, I steer clear of the peanut gallery, and frankly this one gave me the pip. There is a brand new 22-page Steeple special (“Reverend In Love”) by me and GIANT DAYS artist Max Sarin now available as a PDF two ways:
More details in the news posts on the main page.
Well, that’s certainly more than I needed to know about our esteemed warlock. I mean, really… Marmaduke? (Better than Marvin, though, I suppose…) 😛
The joke is, the dog is big!
I may need to adopt this philosophy where any morning where you wake up is a good morning.
Certainly any morning where you don’t use the bathroom directly after Brian does.
Brian!!! Billie!!! I missed you guys!!!
Yes, how does one draw someone taking a big ol’ dump in good taste? Surprise, you don’t! Long live bad taste!
Brian’s expression in the last panel is very Garfield-esque.
Brian is someone who enjoys reading Marnaduke, his expression could only be Heathcliff-esque.
To tell the truth, that scream at the realization of the fact of existence is something that hits me rather often. Usually prior to my morning ablutions.
(Ever notice how the words “fecund” and “fecal” look a bit alike? Like somewhere there’s a common root?)
In today’s Etymology Minute: The two are unrelated.
Fecund comes from the original Latin fecundus meaning fruitful and hasn’t changed much since then. Feces comes by way of Middle English from the latin where Faeces is the plural of Faex, meaning sediment or dreg, as one would find in wine.
In fact, the more intestinal meaning was never present in Latin usage, and it started being used that way in the early 17th ct. by English speakers.
The content I live for; welcome to the Scary Go Round Comics Platinum Club, Sleeper!
Among all the euphemisms English has for the elimination of solid bodily waste, how did “I need to go send a faex” never make the cut?
I believe John P. Crapper lived prior to the invention of the faex machine.
Interesting observation! I took a look at the etymology, and (alas!) the similarity exists only in modern languages.
Fecund derives from Middle French fécond, which in turn is from Latin fecundus (“fertile”), which is related to fētus and fēmina (“woman”).
Fecal [US]/faecal [UK] (“of or related to feces”) is derived from Latin faecēs, which is the nominative plural of faex (“residue, dregs”).
Ah. I now see that I was well and truly beaten to it due to my comment not posting at the time I wrote it. C’est la vie!
Well, this sure talk about what’s inside Brian. Now Billie knows too… she seems to really regret it.
What I wonder – is it simply a terrible tod, or perhaps a tawdry tapeworm?
Having seen what Tredregyn’s Tully monsters are like, I don’t think I want to meet one of their tapeworms.
A new Steeple already off to a great start! Funny, you’d think given all the supernatural happenings and dark forces she’s been privy too, Billie wouldn’t let one of Brian’s unflushed doings terrify her.
She’s been privy to dark forces. But now the dark forces are in her privy.
I know Brian’s brand of Satanism is more raucous and filthy than evil and insidious, but still, taking your beverage or snack to go poop is a step too far for me.
Sound effects as brilliant as ever!
Brian clearly enjoys a high-fibre diet.
Or high fat with incipient gall bladder disease
I think I enjoyed John’s descriptor as much as the comic, and that is saying something. I felt awash in British terminology!
They seem to be very bright and cheerful in the Church of Satan. Apart from the last panel anyway. I thought they’d me more, you know, dark and downcast.
Despite what John says about toilets and related bodily functions he has form on that score. Remember Big Geoff?
I don’t think I remember Big Geoff but then that is not unusual.
Big Geoff was Susan’s father in Giant Days. He stayed in their house for a while nursing Susan and sharing their bathroom – “He’s going to break the toilet” said Esther.
Thanks Steve. Things I wrote in the past are a constant source of surprise to me.
Does anyone besides me want to know if Reverend in Love will ever see a print edition (either standalone or collected with other Steeple comics)?
I think it would be collected if there is a Steeple volume 4. But that’s not something I’m currently working on.
