If they do hit the water with the windows up, I’m sure the reverend has an axe or a dagger or some other sharp metal object handy that can be used to break the window. Possibly several.
Coming from an artist who would reliably completely throw out and change his entire style every six months during the Bobbins era, I think we grizzled veterans of Allisonia have moved beyond such mundane reactions as “surprise”
Clearly the car will momentarily skip through a number of extra dimensions and conveniently return somewhere on the road facing away from the cliff… it’s just as you’d expect if you’ve watched any early Dr Who, Blake’s Seven, Tomorrow People, Star Trek TNG, etc.
Being unfamiliar with multi-dimensional travel, Billie and Rev P will be unable to recognise the journey and will be stunned and confused until much later when their brains are finally able to process the brief warp they experienced.
In panel 4 the car looks so happy… I wonder if Penrose will still wonder if Billie is evil or not after this. Maybe he’ll think she’s just completely crazy.
I mean, personally, in that situation I’d be outwardly showing a lot more emotion than ‘In A Disappointed But Resigned Huff’. That Rev is one stoic SOB.
The Rev probably always imagined that he’d go out in a blaze of glory, so he’s maybe a bit stunned by this development. “This? This is is how the Lord is calling me home?”
I keep coming back to look at panel 5. It’s such a perfect illustration of the relationship between these two characters. I think, if I ever need to explain Steeple to anyone, all I’d really need to do is to show them that one panel, out of context.
The real question is whether the CAR will forgive her. From what we’ve seen, it does not seems to be the forgiving sort.
CHOP
How will our heroes get out of this predicament?!!
WELL THEM DUKE BOYS
At least they won’t feel stupid about it in the end. They probably won’t feel anything in the end.
Hmmm. Maybe they should open the doors and take off their seat belts *before* they hit the water?
Keep the seatbelts on until impact. Windows should be rolled fown
If they do hit the water with the windows up, I’m sure the reverend has an axe or a dagger or some other sharp metal object handy that can be used to break the window. Possibly several.
It appears that her door is partially open.
Looks fully closed to me.
It’s the angle that John’s drawn that side of the car at. It’s definitely closed
No, that’s just a jar
This is starting to look like the kind of plan where you lose your hat, Billie.
“And any plan vere you lose you hat iz a BAD PLAN!”
For reference— https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20031017
On my screen, it looks as if the car’s headed right for a certain Desmond Fishman.
Don’t worry, I’m sure the giant red beach ball will cushion him from the worst of the impact.
I suspect that Des, like Shelley, is essentially unkillable.
Fishman is currently on the island of Avalon approaching a slumbering Arthur with a vuvuzela and gleam of mischief in his eyes.
I like how he doesn’t even seem remotely pressed about them careening off the side of a cliff. Just mildly miffed.
And she’s more embarrassed and apologetic than scared, too.
He is as much a man of action as he is a man of God.
That’s possibly the more nonchalant (less chalant?) anyone has been while heading for an imminent car crash since The Blues Brothers.
She should hit the brakes now to stop the car
That’s how it works in the comics!
Or maybe she will run out of gas. That works, too.
Bugs Bunny and the gremlin!
Plum outta gravity juice! We’ll just have to get out and push
Gotta be that guy. There’s a misspelling in the last panel with text, “foriveness”.
I cannot believe I missed this first time round. I am supposed to be that guy.
Fixed now! Thanks.
Well, it _is_ a Hyundai.
The pareidolia is strong in panel 4. Such sheer bliss!
What is going on with Penrose’s pupils in panel 3?
You mean irises, and it’s just a specular reflection obscuring part of it. Eyeballs are shiny!
I increasingly like to draw a wobbly line, after two decades of sharp angles, this is going to change things for everyone and I understand that.
Or, increasingly, no line at all!
I like it John, an evolution in style!
Coming from an artist who would reliably completely throw out and change his entire style every six months during the Bobbins era, I think we grizzled veterans of Allisonia have moved beyond such mundane reactions as “surprise”
I think it is now time to pull back the curtain and reveal that back then I certainly did not have a “style” worth the name
That parallels with my life being more of a wobbly line than sharp angles as years go by! I can fathom that change.
In all fairness Rev, you went to Billie about a self-driving car so I think it’s you who owes an apology here.
Their mistake was looking down.
Looks kinda like a Thelma and Louise moment.
I presume we will switch to other characters for the rest of the comic.
Honestly, the main problem I see is that the car probably can’t transform with them inside. (Not without doing them grievous injury, that is.)
That sounds like a Perry Bible Fellowship comic.
If gravity and the surface they are rapidly approaching have any say in the matter, the car should transform quite extensively indeed
Any car can be a transformer. Once.
It did something with the Rev in it a couple weeks ago. Saved him from getting squiched between two vehicles.
Maybe it’s a submarine car under the control of the sea monsters. It’s a kidnapping.
Is… is the car hovering? There is that one motion-line in the last panel showing the trajectory, but…
No
Awww.
The hover-car is full of feels
But soon it will be full of eels.
Sooo… did Billie think that the car would adhere to the Wile E. Coyote laws of physics?
I think she thought it would stop on its own before they went over the edge.
The car didn’t want to give itself away.
In panel 4 the car looks so happy… I wonder if Penrose will still wonder if Billie is evil or not after this. Maybe he’ll think she’s just completely crazy.
To my eye, the car’s expression in panel 4 mirrors the Rev’s of the panel before
That seems far more likely.
FYI, the above was a reply to the “completely crazy” comment.
I mean, personally, in that situation I’d be outwardly showing a lot more emotion than ‘In A Disappointed But Resigned Huff’. That Rev is one stoic SOB.
Might as well grab one last bounty of style points before the end
The Rev probably always imagined that he’d go out in a blaze of glory, so he’s maybe a bit stunned by this development. “This? This is is how the Lord is calling me home?”
More like a blaze of gory.
This is the point where the interval was in cinema showings of ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ when I first saw it.
I predict they will encounter something Jason-related at the bottom.
She should have put on the driving gloves. This situation called for greater grip.
She definitely has lost her grip.
To be fair, “driving off the cliff” is pretty much Billie’s core groove.
I actually did a LOL at Penrose in panel 5. I rarely do LOLs at things I read. Thanks, John A.
Love how they both presume this is not a big problem.
I keep coming back to look at panel 5. It’s such a perfect illustration of the relationship between these two characters. I think, if I ever need to explain Steeple to anyone, all I’d really need to do is to show them that one panel, out of context.
Looking forward to the upcoming SPECTRAL: The Adventures of Ghost Billie and Ghost Rev. Penrose.
Just to mess with everyone, drop a little “FIN” onto that last panel.
Oh cool, a page that also serves as a meme template for political commentary!
