High-pitched death-tone
It’s almost as if, despite their schism, Billie and the Reverend were always meant to work together. They fit like hand in string-back driving glove.

Choked by pine tree air fresheners is the best evil-car-death ever!
I assume you mean choked MORE than the normal amount of choking inflicted by those odoriferous things.
Now I’m envisioning an entire car full of passengers clawing feebly and uselessly at the doors, as the air freshener sways gently, innocently from the rearview mirror.
Crushed by fuzzy dice must be close behind.
I’m still waiting for Tom and Mrs Clovis to form an alliance.
It would have to be out of mutual spite
I truly doubt Tom and Mrs. C. are, or ever will be, A Thing. But … it has been obvious that Brian has a little crush on Mrs. C. And, despite what she has said about him, that crush is not 100% unreciprocated.
I don’t mean like a couple; just an alliance. As they’re the two most unhappy with the friendlier interactions between the two churches.
What is going on with the Rev’s left knee cap in Panel 1?
Do you mean the gloves laying across his leg?
no his other knee 😉
Or maybe signs like, oh I dunno, eliciting affection and protectiveness despite it’s mediocre appearance and suspicious behavior.
Also, given the car’s subtle powers of persuasion, the only reasonable explanation for its long stay on the sale lot is the car is picky.
Don’t assume that it isn’t crafty! Worst mistake lots of people make
A lady of the black cloth has to take precautions, especially when those precautions look so good.
I love this little detail of the Reverend’s personality: Yes, he believes the car may be demonically possessed, but that doesn’t mean he won’t immediately buff away whatever small mark Billie’s derrière may have left behind.
I liked that detail, too.
Surely even a demonic auto of the ‘Christine’ mould would respond to this level of attentiveness! Could this be the start of a demon car redemption arc?
Man likes his car, I suppose.
Seems the plan is “exorcise the car so I can keep it.”
Maybe it’s just me, but I think Billie just wanted to try driving Penrose’s new car. Seeing how she likes to imagine various ways the car could kill them is hilarious.
There was a joke like that.
An engineer and a computer programmer designed a self drive car. They took it for a test drive but coming down a steep, windy road with a precipitous cliff on one side it went out of control. It screamed around corners barely missing from falling off the cliff. They just about made it to the bottom in one piece. Badly shaken, the engineer got out. “That was close” he said. “I’ll go through all my designs and drawings and check them.” The computer programmer got out too. “Maybe I made a mistake in the code,” he said. “Lets go back to the top, try again and see if the same thing happens.”
I just noticed- there seems to be another Steeple story coming after part 2 of this one! Yay! (Also, if the title for the strip on 02/08/2023 is uttered by the person I suspect it may be uttered by, that’s a “Yay!” as well.)
Y’know, it is kinda amazing how quickly and well Billie has adapted to playing for The Other Team!
I wonder how much time in-comic’s passed at this point since she switched teams?
About eight months, I think.
Is that all???
Ok admit it Billie, you only did this so you could wear the Rev’s gloves.
So reverend’s gloves can fit to Billie’s hands? I doubt they have same sized hands, and this is obvious from this page in several panels. Perhaps the gloves are magical and can auto-fit any hand?
It’s like Johnny Cochrane said, “If the glove’s too large / Billie’s in charge”
That was my first thought too. I imagine he’s a size 11 or 12 and she’s a 7 or 8. The would not aid grip, quite the opposite!
All Billie has to do is think of the song “Comfortably Numb” and her hands blow up like two balloons.
Pink Floyd or Scissor Sisters versions both valid.
Billie hasn’t had a lot of luck with cars in Tredregyn seeing as how her first car exploded into flames on entering the town. Maybe it’s part of the plan to get us all on bikes.
The pile of horror to come in red is brilliant.
The Rev knows that Billie represents a power greater than himself: pure undiluted niceosity.
I mean, the Rev never convinced a sea beast to come in for tea, did he?
Given the nature of the car/mechanoid – a sort of automotive-robot, if you will – I wonder if ‘demonic’ is the right word, here. It saved a two-fisted Anglican fighting-priest from certain death, then went and Smote the maleficent device that had almost caused the accident. That sounds more… *angelic*, in an Old Testament sort of way.
This may end up being a bit of a *problem* for Billie. Again, in an Old Testament sort of way.
I’m pretty sure the car isn’t actually demonic (I could be wrong). I’m pretty sure the Reverend’s barking up the wrong tree here. Although, he’s clearly right that there’s something about the car, but I doubt demonism plays into it. It makes perfect sense that Reverend Penrose would think it was demonic, under the circumstances, though. he didn’t see what we could a glimpse of a few pages ago.
I am in favor of smiting the evils.
Are they going to have to do an Auto Exorcism? “The Power of Chrysler compels you!”
Very good, Mark L, very good.
Auto da fé!
A rather bizarre short story by Roger Zelazney, involving sentient cars.
Good one.
I’m not sure if the “an” before “high-pitched death-tone” is a typo, or if Billie just has an accent that drops initial h’s.
I either thought it was funny, or it’s a typo. It was more that two months ago that I typed it so I no longer remember. It’s probably a typo, though.
It is no longer a typo.
What is with this crazy font??? It’s throwing me off…..is anyone else seeing the “helvetica neue” or is it just my demonic computer again??
The previous comic/comment plugin for wordpress has been reinstated (afaict). Rejoice!
Ooh, you are lucky to see ‘Helvetica’. I’m seeing ‘Century Gothic’. Demonic, I’m sure.
