Coby and Maggie appear to know each other prior.
Family pet, obvs.
The, uh, python. Not Maggie.
In this family, you may be closer the other way around!
I would like to see a horrible choppy end to Bob Warren.
You know, maybe, but not too soon.
If Bob Warren is the true Big Bad of Tredregyn’s story – or perhaps Grandmother Warren (as has been noted before, there is nothing more terrifying than a powerful, evil old woman in a John Allison setting) – well, they seem to fit. There’s a grandeur there.
I’m “well into it”, as I believe the UK slang goes.
I can’t understand if Maggie is afraid of that lovely python or why she understood the ritual that her Amazing family (even the grandmother? seriously??) wants to do using her as a sacrifice. But if Penrose doesn’t break the nose of that caricature of a father, I’ll be really, really disappointed. At least a big slap!.
“that caricature of a father”
I think he’s supposed to be a caricature, period. 😉
Being used to seeing Maggie full of spirit and irreverence, it’s really unnerving to see her acquiescing to the whims of her insane family. It speaks volumes about what her upbringing must have been like, since I can’t see her putting up with this kind of nonsense from anyone else…
It also paints her participation in Satanism in a different light. I had initially thought her participation in the COS was because she was culturally rebellious, but it seems clear that it’s actually connected to how she grew up.
It’s not uncommon to see stories about young people dealing with their weird Christian evangelical upbringings, and this seems kind of like an extra creepy twist on that.
I was struck by Maggie’s lack of spirit, too. And this posting is a splendid observation top-to-bottom!
Check out the fists clenched in impotent rage in panel 3!
Fact is, anyone’s religious (even ‘atheistically’ religious) upbringing can be creepy. I can only wonder at what stories are presently being formed because of current events.
This entire page is absolutely terrifying.
This is the most menacing Steeple has felt. Characters have been in peril before, but this is intimate and claustrophobic and real.
Absolutely perfectly said as ever, Rob
You know, I was genuinely afraid Bob was just going to sacrifice his daughter outright.
I may be an oddity, but this weird, snake-based, Addams-Family-esque ritual has me breathing a sigh of relief.
That last panel calls to mind Cow Tools for some reason.
That amulet looking thing could be a bezoar…
Yeah, the Rev better hurry. I don’t like the look of this.
What is that thing on the lower right corner of the tray? A shrunken head?
A real chill has come over the story!
I have a sneaking suspicion that Maggie is NOT supposed to be a sacrifice; I suspect that she is supposed to be the OFFICIANT at a sacrifice (thankfully not of Billie, who is locked out of the proceedings) or other extreme mystic ritual
Yeah, they’re going to have her kill her favorite family pet in front of everyone.
Interesting (and slightly disturbing) to find out dad-mom is involved. But not totally surprising.
I hope Bob’s words turn on him and he experiences enough fear that he knows true humility.
I imagine that the Rev may show him fear in a handful of dust and a sodding great axe/
Great I am now afraid for not only Maggie wellbeing and also for the albino noodle…
It’s terrifying that Coby and Maggie are the most decent souls in the room right now. Hurry up Rev!
Can we at least pretend that it’s Steve McClaren’s python?
We all know that Casper would never do harm, he’s a bundle of yummy cuddles wrapped up in a smile tortilla!
Coby is worn like a feather boa in panel 4.
Please. A feather python.
My ex’s mother keeps a small ball python as a pet, and I promise this is actually a thing among python enthusiasts.
I was privileged to “wear” her as a Halloween costume accessory one year, in fact. They’re lovely creatures. Meek and mild as milk. Despite that, one kid actually ran away screaming.
on the one hand, terrifying evil demonic ritual
on the other hand, snek.
DILEMMA
The snek is innocent in all this as well. Hope they rebel!
The snek is probably a virgin too. Noooo
snek = hugz
Lutino, surely?
“You are what you eat” ? Are they going to kill and eat the snake ? Ritually,
I think he’s implying that the snake eats lambs. “She’s gentle as a lamb. You are what you eat, after all.”
Indeed, a snake eating a lamb would be very much in line with Satanic symbolism.
Does her positioning of the snake in panel 4 mean we can expect a rendition of “I’m A Slave 4U” during the ceremony?
She wasn’t truly scared until she heard grandma was there….. Nothing suspicious about that at all.
I’m pretty nervous about seeing that grandma’s face. (Partly because I recently watched Get Out, which has a quite different grandma, but no less scary.)
I’d have other people taste-test the cookies THIS Gramma makes!
