Our minds are all we need
Some comics don’t come together easy and it is often those with just a few simple panels that I find hardest. I wrangled this one for hours longer than usual. Balance is everything with only a few elements in play. I think I got there on this occasion.
I really love Lottie’s fashion taste, it seems like a very personal sense of style and it really works!
Today’s outfit is a bit reminiscent of a combination of Daphne & Fred (of scooby doo fame). Fellow crime solvers to be sure!
Who is Sue?
Sug(ar) I think?
Sus
Sussudio
Su5?
Penrose’s collection of medieval weapons is impressive and he’s rightfully proud of it. Lottie is more and more amazed by this incredible priest all mind and muscles and Penrose seems have a lot of fun. This is nice! But I really hope Maggie will come and decide if it’s the case to stop them or to go with them.
“Is this your LARPing arsenal?” Lottie still doesn’t quite realize who she’s dealing with here, does she…
My thoughts exactly.
This make everything even more funny and interesting.
Or what he looks for on his patrols.
She’s from Tacklford. She knows.
She’s not used to working with someone as… aggressively violent as Reverend Penrose, though.
Violence has never really been the answer to Tackleford’s supernatural and cryptozoological problems. Lottie was briefly supportive of Jesper Bloem’s “Big Blast” but even that didn’t turn out to be the solution.
She’s played in a band with Blossom Cooper on drums.
That bookcase secret door could get stuck if unbalanced.
But it is working perfectly as the set up for mayhem.
My feeling is that it is cantilevered top and bottom for total reliability and balance, there are almost certainly some ball bearings involved in its action too.
What is the title on the false book that activates the lever?
Isn’t it always something like “Open Here?”, Or maybe “Open Here” in Latin or Cornish or something?
Penrose has finally met someone who shares his same devotion and commitment to their work and calling. I only worry that this partnership might fray once Lottie sees to what degree Penrose is willing to go to stop evil in his town.
I love Charlotte’s low key Fred from Scooby Doo cosplay
Oh. My. God! That didn’t even register! I dip my head in shame!
People have been comparing me to Scooby Doo for 20 years and here’s the thing: I didn’t like that show when I was a kid and the feeling hasn’t changed. The only thing I like in Scooby Doo is Scrappy because he f*cked those guys up big style.
Here’s Lottie’s fashion inspo for this outfit…

All hail the McCartney Rickenbacker!
Hofner, not Rick, but yeah, pretty cool.
I’m with you! Never liked Scooby Doo, still don’t
So missing the hat, though.
Lottie seems to have eschewed the pleather pants.
I’m sorry. I’m your evil twin, here. I *HATE* Scrappy-Doo! And I didn’t like the later seasons where they actually started in with supernatural explanations. Since they started out “grounded in reality” (as much of a “reality” as you could have with a talking, intelligent dog), I considered it a cop-out.
If you want “the Gang” cosplay, https://www.puckcomics.com/ is on an arc covering it. There was a short war over who would be Daphne.
BTW – the latest “Girl Genius” referenced an airship named the Esther de Groot. Just thought you’d like to know!
Dang, you beat me to it! Here’s a link though: https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20210607
Beat me as well.
I was just coming here to say this.
Even worse, it sunk while making an expedition to the Americas…
I mean, considering Tackleford is probably miles underwater in the GG universe, but still.
I’m sure there’s a version of Tackleford in the Girl Genius universe. Probably an English underwater town of some sort. There’s also got to be a version of Tredregyn, considering the sea monster angle.
I can’t imagine ANYONE comparing your work to that of Scooby-f$#%in’-Doo. Man, I hated those cartoons as a kid, being more of a Jay Ward fan over anything cranked out by Hanna-Barbara.
The mysteries of Scary Go Round, in particular, struck a Scoob-ish chord in people’s minds. I like Hanna Barbera – Alex Toth designed so many of their characters, after all, but something about Scooby Doo felt wrong to me. I think it was Fred. That guy was only in the Mystery Machine gang for one thing.
Toth and Hanna Barbera
The cravats?
Daphne.
Yeah. Scooby Doo also came from the pre-Batman the Animated Series era where cartoons were required to be ‘ultra safe’. So there’s probably lots of innuendo or just bad writing simply because there was no way to tell a reasonable story in those constraints. Was Fred REALLY there just for Daphne? It’s logical, but probably not safe enough, so it just hung awkwardly forever…
John, I think the tendency to have stories where there are mysteries, but in the end no one dies / everything ends up kind of just re-arranged is probably what got people (or maybe just the hot redhead) … really no other context for the combination of mystery plus endless yarn for the Yankee mind.
That being said I like not killing characters frequently simply because it makes deaths more meaningful / painful to the reader. Then as a nod to ‘realism’ you spin the clock a little bit and clean up the extras behind the scenes.
Of course, the difference is that Scooby-Doo monsters were all just cranky old men in costumes. In SGR, a fishman is really a fishman.
Although sometimes a dread ghost pirate is Gibbous Moon and a gang of postmen smugglers.
Well, yeah, but, I mean, can you blame him?
I like the meta-commentary on Lottie’s previous detective work where she was working with the cops.
A priest hole! ????
***Orson Welles applauding***
Hey, John. You got a call-out in today’s Girl Genius in the form of a British airship the HMA Esther De Groot.

God, the royalties must be pouring in!
The “camera work” in this panel is great. Gives a static scene a really sense of motion.
Yes, but have these weapons been properly polished? I don’t see any Brasso in there…
I thought the name of Her Majesty’s Airship in this “Girl Genius” sound familiar: “H.M.A Esther De Groot”?

That collection would likely get Penrose hauled off to a long stay in Hotel Ironbar, given Britain’s laws wrt weaponry, if the cops were called.
Here in Texas those would be party favors.
I guess in Texas it’d have to be full of bump stocks? Or was that chainsaw bayonets. (I don’t remember if Texas actually banned bump stocks)
Wrong pal, everyone knows saps, sand clubs, blackjacks, brass knuckles, leaded gloves, stiletto knives over 3″ are illegal in most locations and can get you arrested…
So much for the USA 2nd Amendment.
But at least I can carry 100 round magazines,a bump stock, an assault rifle, a 9mm pistol and a .22 derringer sleeve gun instead.
To be honest, I’d prefer to be able to own guns and tanks than 3″ knives. I guess it depends on your expectations.
(Switchblades, though! The crossbows of the greaser era!)
Oh, I exaggerate a bit but there have been changes here you may not be aware of. Longer knives are legal now. So are leaded gloves. Brass knuckles are still out. As for the rest, a lot depends on whether the cop likes your looks.
Either the Reverend’s clock needs new batteries, or Lottie really is the master of the quick change.
58 minutes seems like plenty of time for her to get dressed.
Oh, duh. I was thinking of minutes and seconds, instead of hours and minutes, which of course makes no sense.
“The only weapon we need is our minds.”
“Yes, our minds, and this closet full of weapons.”
It seems that an extra “i” has slipped into “detailing”.
I think detailiing is the plural
I doubt it. You do have “skiing” because “ski” already has one i at the end, but “detail” doesn’t have that.
Wrong buddy, you just don’t know to properly decline an english noun
sg. detail detaili detailem detaili detailo
pl. detaili detailorum detailes* detailibus detailibus**
*usually shortened to details
** detail is irregular and gets the -ibus rather than -is ending
common mistake for the ESL folks!
Oops. Sorry. Malum meum. ????
That’s Latin. English declension goes: sing. detail, detail, detailes, detaile; pl. detailas, detailas, detaila, detailum.
Yeah. I had forgotten that Alex Toth was so deeply involved in Hanna-Barbara’s better efforts. I liked Space Ghost & Jonny Quest just as much as everybody else did. Having said that, I still really hated Scooby-Doo. And yeah, Fred was a dick. You just knew that later on, he’d go work for some multi-million dollar insurance outfit, sometimes sitting alone in his office late at night, getting drunk and wondering whatever happened to the rest of the gang.
